Paula Albrecht Samico
Advanced Clinical Resident
I am a strong believer that every human being has extreme potential and the capacity to strive through challenges and achieve their goals. I know that we can face unexpected situations in life and those may generate negative emotions and sensations in us that feel unbearable, but I am here to tell you it can get better, and beginning your therapy process is a great step in that direction. I highly value creating a warm and accepting space in my practice so that people can feel safe and supported. Working mainly with psychodynamic theory, I believe that our past relationships and experiences have a strong impact on how we see others and ourselves today, and working through those emotions is essential in order to reach a freer and healthier self. I also apply an integrative lens, pulling from approaches such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and Strength-based theory when needed. I consider having a multicultural and social justice perspective extremely important, as sociohistorical systems that create privileges and oppression play a crucial role in how we move in the world. I am an affirmative professional, who aspires to aid LGBTQIA+ individuals and the community as a whole, not solely in the counseling room but also in educational, medical, market work, and political spaces.
I have a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology and I am currently studying to receive a Master’s degree in Counseling for Mental Health and Wellness at New York University, along with a Post-Master's Advanced certification to work with LGBTQ+ individuals. While I work with you, I will be supported and guided by a Licensed Clinical Social Worker. I, however, have experience counseling adults with depression, general and social anxiety, self-esteem, and stress. My native language is Portuguese and I am proficient in English. I would feel honored to work as your counselor and help you in your journey towards an improved quality of life.
